Los Angeles Chinatown

Some snapshots I took while at Wing Wa Hing, our favorite store for oriental decors, lucky bamboo plants, Chinese instrumental CDs and other knick-knacks.

Haul from the Japanese Market

… salad dressing, soy sauce, sashimi sauce, wasabi, Japanese rice, rice seasoning and some sweet treats. The fresh sushi-grade fish flown from Japan went straight to the fridge.

Nijiya Market

From Tsujita, we made a quick stop at Volcano Tea House to grab ‘’to-go” ice blended milk tea – honeydew with boba for hubby and honeydew with almond jelly and pudding for me.

Then we walked across the street to our favorite  Japanese market – Nijiya.

Sashimi Night

Poppep-up in Little Osaka at Nijiya, our go-to market for sushi-grade fish and took home slabs of the usual favorites Bincho Maguro, (Albacore Tuna), Hon Maguro (Blue Fin Tuna), Hamachi (Yellowtail) and Kanpachi (Amberjack) as well as Uni and Ikura (Salmon Roe).

Since we're running low on Japanese rice, we also got a bag of Kokuho Rose and soft tofu for the mabo tofu sauce we bought from another Oriental market a week ago.

Also went home with a soup base we haven't tried before, I hope it turns out good. A pack of Japanese cake and different varieties of mushroom.

Here's a snapshot of our Japanese-themed Friday night.

A Busy Saturday

A busy day running here, there and everywhere!

Morning started early with a trip to the dentist for husband's appointment.  An hour later it was a run and a dash at Glendale Galleria for a little bit of shopping. Stopped by at the newly-opened Blaze for some pizza. I had the "Link In" which has sausage, red peppers, sauteed onions and mozzarella in red sauce.  Husband opted for the "Build Your Own."  Both were delicious.

Went home, dressed-up, then drove to a cousin's wedding at a historical building with no AC. Autumn, can you come anytime now?

Anyway, here are some snapshots of the day...

Summer Bounty

It's Sunday morning. The usual routine -- church, brunch and a trip to Whole Foods stocking up mostly on what's in season produce, meat, seafood, Little Guy's milk and some dried goods.

Here's a snapshot of what we will be eating this week... tomatoes, eggplant, corn, potatoes, collard, watermelon and pappardelle pasta.

The short-ribs, skinless/boneless chicken breast and hot Italian sausages went straight to the fridge. Along with fish and mussels which will be made into bouillabaisse for tonight's dinner.

Today's Shopping from Whole Foods Market

Figs, nectarines, watermelon and blueberries. A bunch of kale, a box of mushroom, some tomatoes , eggplant, potatoes, cucumbers, bell pepper, zucchini and Italian squash. Beef, whole chicken legs, Italian sausage and chicken liver. Pasta, puttanesca sauce and chicken broth. French bread.

The goat cheese and Camembert went straight to the fridge.

Nijiya Japanese Market

After the picnic we drove to Sawtelle also known as Little Osaka to get some sushi-grade fish from our favorite Japanese market/grocery store Nijiya.

By the entrance, on the left side, there is a food stall with no cashier so payment is made inside the store. Once you hand-over the receipt they will prepare the food.

Husband grabbed a skewer of grilled octopus and a box of udon and we three sat in one of the set-up tables.

Back to shopping, we grabbed Wakame (Seaweed Salad)  in the prepared food section. Then proceeded to the fish section and got Bincho Maguro (Albacore Tuna), Hon Maguro (Blue Fin Tuna), Hamachi (Yellowtail), Uni and Ikura (Salmon Roe). From the grocery section we got ponzu sauce, sashimi soy sauce, ginger dressing, Japanese rice, wasabi and furikake.

Oh, What a Wonderful Sunday!

This past Sunday we had brunch with my mother-in-law at Granville CafΓ© at The Americana in Glendale.  I had Chipotle Chicken Club Sandwich with Avocado, Red Onions, Cheese, Bacon, Organic Spring Greens drizzled with Red Wine Vinaigrette.... YUM!

After brunch we went for a leisurely stroll at The Americana. Mom got polo shirts (Nemo and Cars) for our Little Bundle of Joy from the Disney store.  Usually, we stop by Barnes & Noble, but on Sunday Mom was in a shopping mode for a purse so we went to Glendale Galleria before heading to Neiman Marcus at Topanga Mall in Woodland Hills.  Mom got a Prada purse and she also bought me a Tory Burch purse (photo here). As I already said in my previous blog, I'm incredibly blessed to have such a loving and generous mother-in-law.

And now, here are some photos from our Sunday stroll....
