Today the sun is out and the weather is great -- just like
almost any other day in Los Angeles, so I thought it would be fun to start a series of
Weekend Getaways.
If you live in California there’s no shortage of weekend destinations. You can go your whole life and not hit them all. From large cities to small towns, deserts, snow-capped mountains and miles and miles of breathtaking coastline -- the possibilities for day trips and getaways are endless. So crank up those tunes and roll down those windows and let’s gaze upon the beautiful Golden State as it rolls by. First stop…Joshua Tree National Park.
“Trampled in dust. I'll show you a place. High on a desert plain. Where the streets have no name.” What comes to mind? Yes, it is U2’s 1988 Grammy Album of the Year -- The Joshua Tree.
Magical and mysterious, Joshua Tree National Park is located about 150 miles from Los Angeles. At almost 800,000 acres the park covers two deserts – Colorado in the east and Mojave in the west. The Mojave Desert is the perfect habitat for the Joshua trees. Named by 19th-century Mormon pioneers, Joshua Tree’s outstretched branches reminded them of the biblical story in which the prophet Joshua reaches his hands towards the sky in prayer.
Here are some photos we snapped as we drove in the desert country -- far enough out into the middle of nowhere – "where the streets have no name."
